Secret Courts – nothing that is morally wrong can be politically right

Over at the Lib Dems Against Secret Courts blog, Jo Shaw does a good job of destroying some of the ridiculous arguments put in favour of the Justice and Security Bill in her response to a Lib Dem MP. This is a Bill which will place the Government above the law, allowing it to present ‘secret’ evidence against you which you will never know about because you will be forced to leave the courtroom.

Jo (any many other Lib Dem members) explain it in this video:

This is likely to be debated at Lib Dem Spring Conference in Brighton from 8th to 10th March. There is a rumour going around that the more controversial elements of the Bill will be rushed through the House of Commons in advance of Spring Conference. If this is true this is a serious error in judgement, especially given that one of the first items of business at Spring Conference is a vote to make it easier to sack the leader of the party.

At Lib Dem Autumn Conference in Brighton last year, Nick Clegg in his closing speech gave a hat tip to past leaders of our party, here is a reminder of what Gladstone himself said:

“Nothing that is morally wrong can be politically right.”

What do you think?
